Did You Know?
-
In Pennsylvania, 13,000-15,000 children are currently in foster care, and across the U.S., over 400,000 children enter foster care annually.
-
1 in 4 youth who “age out” of the system faces homelessness and struggle with mental health challenges like depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.
-
Young women in foster care are 2.5 times more likely to become pregnant by age 19 than their peers outside of foster care.
-
Nearly 50% of youth who “age out” of the foster care system will not graduate from high school, and they are twice as likely to drop out.
By addressing these issues, OAP aims to improve these statistics by 10-20% and provide the support needed to build brighter futures for youth in foster care.
Overview
The Opportunity Adkinson Project (OAP) was founded in 2018 by Johnna Adkinson in response to the urgent needs facing our communities. As a self-sufficient non-profit, OAP provides a safe, temporary living arrangement for children in placement, with the goal of reunifying families and rebuilding family structures.
Purpose
At OAP, our mission is to unite families by supporting youth in developing the mental, physical, and social skills they need to thrive upon reunification or reintegration into the community. We help youth prepare for a successful, independent future, equipped with the skills and confidence needed to succeed.
